In a huge win for labor, America’s meat processing companies are stepping up to the plate and treating their plant workers just like the thousands of cattle and fowl they slaughter daily.
“Regarding us as the equivalent of farm animals is a huge step forward for the industry,” said Ricardo Gomez, a Smithfield Foods employee and labor organizer. “Forcing us to work under deadly conditions proves that management finally acknowledges that we’re as important as the cows, pigs, and chickens we kill. In ten or twenty years, they may even take the next step and start treating us like humans. Who knows?”
